Mentoring benefits both children and families. Children with incarcerated parents are a diverse group, who happen to share a common experience. Thus, they will benefit from mentoring in a variety of ways. Children with caregivers who have many work commitments may benefit from having an additional adult who can spend time with them, taking part in activities and going on outings. Other children may enjoy playing games and sports with their mentor. Many children benefit from an additional adult who can help them with their homework and encourage them in school. Mentors can even provide an objective ear and support as children struggle with their parent’s incarceration.

When children spend time with their mentors, it can open up free time for the child’s caregiver or parent. Also, some research indicates that children with mentors have better relationships with parents and peers and are less likely to skip school, more likely to feel confident about their schoolwork, and more likely to graduate highschool or go on to college.

To enroll your child, or to request information for a child you feel could benefit, contact us to start the enrollment process. We’ll schedule a meeting at your convenience in a location of your choice with you and your child. At this meeting, we’ll discuss the program and answer any questions you may have. We’ll also talk about the type of mentor you would like your child to have. Once your child is matched with a mentor, a program staff member will contact you regularly to see how you think the match is going, and to address any concerns or questions you may have.

To get started today, please send us an e-mail and find out what mentoring can offer your child.
